What's a hurricane cut and why is it bad?
A hurricane cut strips the palm of all but a few top fronds. It looks tidy, but it stresses the palm, slows growth, and makes the tree lean toward the sun. Certified tree crews stop at 9-and-3 or 10-and-2 clock positions — only fully dead or dying fronds come off, plus seed pods. Aggressive cuts are cheap and destructive.
How much does palm removal cost?
Depends heavily on size and access. A small queen palm in an open lot runs $500 to $800. A mature queen palm over 30 feet in a tight backyard runs $1,200 to $2,500. A massive Mexican fan (60+ feet) requiring a crane can hit $3,500 or more. Date palms priced similarly. Disposal is expensive because palm trunks are heavy and don't chip.
Do you remove palm stumps?
Palms don't form traditional stumps — the root ball is fibrous, not woody. We cut the trunk flush and remove the crown, and the root system decomposes on its own over a year or two. If you need the spot for a replant or hardscape, we excavate the root ball for an add-on fee.
