Land Clearing

Land clearing and defensible space. CAL FIRE ready.

Fire-prone San Diego lots need active management. CAL FIRE requires a 100-foot defensible space around every structure in the State Responsibility Area, and many inland, East County, and mountain properties are subject to annual inspections. We clear to code: brush, deadfall, undergrowth, overgrown trees, and ladder fuels.

What do homeowners ask about Land Clearing?

What's defensible space and do I really need it?

Defensible space is the cleared buffer around structures that slows or stops a wildfire. CAL FIRE requires 100 feet in the State Responsibility Area. Local fire authorities enforce it annually with drive-by inspections in many East County, mountain, and inland SD neighborhoods. Non-compliance can mean fines ($100 to $500), insurance non-renewal, and worst case, your house burns down when the neighbor's didn't.

What's the difference between Zone 0, 1, and 2?

Zone 0 (0-5 feet from structures) is the ember-resistant zone: no combustibles at all, no wood mulch against siding, no dead plants. Zone 1 (5-30 feet) is cleared of dead vegetation, irrigated plants only, and limb-raised trees. Zone 2 (30-100 feet) is thinned and ladder-fuel-reduced, not scorched earth. New 2023 Zone 0 rules are stricter, we brief you on current code during the estimate.

How much does land clearing cost?

A standard quarter-acre residential lot with moderate brush runs $1,500 to $3,500. A half-acre East County hillside with dense chaparral runs $4,000 to $8,000. Multi-acre ranch properties run $8,000 to $25,000 or more, and are usually quoted per acre at $3,000 to $6,000 depending on density and terrain. First-time clearing is always more expensive than annual maintenance.

Do I need a permit to clear my land?

Defensible space clearing up to 100 feet around structures does not require a permit. Heritage Trees and protected species within the clearing zone still require removal permits. Large-scale clearing (more than an acre) or clearing in environmentally sensitive areas (wetlands, coastal zones) may trigger MSCP (Multi-Species Conservation Program) review. We identify permit needs during the site visit.

A eucalyptus limb came down on our fence during the first Santa Ana of the season. Branch Pro had a crew out within two hours, chipped and hauled everything, and the quote matched what they said on the phone. No surprise charges.

Melissa R. Emergency Tree Removal · Carlsbad

Needed Zone 1 compliance before our insurance renewal. They walked the property, flagged the dead oak branches and the overgrown chaparral, and had it all cleared in a day. Insurance signed off first look. Exactly what I was hoping for.

David K. Defensible Space Clearing · El Cajon

Three queen palms and a Mexican fan that hadn't been touched in years. Crew climbed the fans instead of using a lift, left everything clean, and explained exactly how often each species needs servicing. Fair price, no upsell.
